M-line: Arca's Other Monorail
Arca-Swiss makes two monorail product lines: the widely known F-line, and the higher-end M-line. Their most fundamental difference lies in where the movements sit—the F-line builds rise / shift / tilt / swing into the front and rear frames, balancing field portability; the M-line concentrates them onto the front and rear "function carriers," for greater rigidity and more complete sets of movement, and Micro-Orbix geared tilt is standard.
Today's M-line is represented by the M-Monolith series, split into two cameras: the pared-down M-two (formats up to 4×5) and the flagship M-monolith (formats up to 8×10). It targets professional studios, architecture, and large-format fine-art work, handling film, digital backs, and DSLR / mirrorless alike.
M-two: The Pared-Down Modular Double-Standard
The M-two is the M-monolith's "lean sibling": a modular double-standard (paired front and rear units) camera aimed at architecture and landscape, with formats up to 4×5, configurable from 35mm / DSLR and 6×9 all the way to 4×5 film or a digital back.
Division of movements: the rear unit = geared, self-locking focus + rise + shift; the front unit = geared swing + Micro-Orbix geared tilt. Specs: vertical / horizontal shift of 70mm each, 30° swing, 90° tilt, 190mm maximum extension—all with calibrated scales for repeatable readings. Micro-Orbix is standard on the M-two.
Self-weight is roughly 2 kg and change (4.4 lbs), with dimensions around 250 × 140 × 300mm.
M-monolith: The Flagship, and the Source of Yaw-Free
The M-monolith is the M-line's flagship: a modular view camera with the greatest rigidity and the most complete feature set. It first introduced three-axis yaw-free (anti-nutation) movement in 1987, laying the groundwork for the yaw-free standard that the whole industry later adopted.
Format coverage spans 6×9 / 4×5 / 5×7 / 8×10; each of the front and rear units carries micro-metric geared movements: ±50mm shift, +70mm rise, ±45° swing, ±45° base tilt, and ±15° Micro-Orbix tilt. Compared with the M-two, it is more rigid, heavier, reaches 8×10, and offers fully symmetrical front-and-rear movements (the M-two is leaner, topping out at 4×5).
The F-Classic lets you make a single movement; the M-monolith lets you read every movement off a scale at the scale of 8×10 and achieve three-axis yaw-free—this is what it looks like when Arca pushes "precision" to its limit.
